what happened to livejournal? It seems to have completely died in the arse. Everyone used to post almost every day. Methinks the greasy tentacles of facebook have hence reached even this dim corner of the interwebs

John Digweed - Heaven Scent |

Listening to the soundtrack from the rave film "Groove". Not the greatest film, but a marvellous soundtrack. It's one of the few soundtracks the actually captures more than just the essence of the movie. It also captures theme. In this case, going to raves. It starts out fairly light an upbeat, then, instead of getting hard and brain meltingly fast, it gets trancey. It comes as close to the feeling of being at a happy rave as i've seen without actually being there. Once it has you thoroughly in that mindset, it slowly wakes you up and brings you home. ANy true raver worth their salt should hear it. I don't mean listen to it in the background. I mean sit down and listen to it.

| Thinking about building a HTPC |

Ive been looking all over Whirlpool for info about building a HTPC. After failing to put one together myself as there's so many options, i found this build:
CPU AMD 4850e Mobo GA-MA78GM-S2H RAM 2gb HDD Seagate 1tb SATA Graphics Onboard Case Antec NSK2480B Burner LiteOn SATA
Anyone got an opinion? It's a little over my budget so if I can get it below $600 that'd be great. if possible i'd also like to source my parts from one location but it seems that shit is sold out here and there.

Can someone explain to me how people like aXXo manage to keep high resolution & bitrates on 700mb avi files? Seriously, im trying to back up some of my DVD collection, and I have space constraints. The best I can do on a 700mb limit is about 2/3rds of what some of these guys get. lets say aXXo puts out a movie with 600*340 @ 800bitrate, I can maybe get 480*240 @ 600bitrate for the same file size. what am I missing?

Greetings fellow maniacs!
I've been hunting high and low but to no avail. Does anyone know where I can buy a 4 bay external casing for IDE hard drives that I can plug into my computer via USB? I've got 4 old drives laying about that I want to use as backup. RAID is not needed. Every shop I walk into looks at me like I asked if they stock alien kidneys. Seems IDE is now a foreign word in most computer shops.

Title aside for a sec...
This goes out to all computer savvy peeps
The time is slowly coming for me to retire my trusty old computer. Its had a hard life and has asked for a nice pension payout.
Meaning im looking at building a new computer. Ive been looking at MSY a bit for parts, and thats where i'll be going. My budget is going to be about $600 tops, but wont be for about 10 months. all i need is mobo, ram, cpu, graphics, case and budget sound card. HDD's, monitor, mouse etc...
most of my needs will be in image editing and then the usual internet shit. maybe the occasional game. does anyone have any suggestions for parts?
i throw open the floor to suggestions

In my travels around the news blogs, I occasionally come across the latest and greatest techology in weaponry. the Rail Gun, lasers and this AA-12, touted as the worlds deadliest shotgun. this thing is capable of firing up to 300 rounds a minute with almost zero recoil.
now, this is where my gripe comes in. a lot of the comments on these articles were along the lines of "wow, thats so cool. i want one for christmas" and beauties like "i cant wait to pwn sum n00bz when that makes it into an fps". and this isnt the first timer ive heard this kind of comment made. that last comment really gave me the shits. people who comment like this obviously haven't seen the damage that a shotgun does up close. this AA-12 would give a single man the ability to completely liquify a protest crowd on his own, and people seem to think this is 'cool'. people who think this is "cool" should hear the stories from my father about just what being in war is like, then they should shut the flying fuck up.
is there going to be a point where we put the fucking guns down? can someone who plays those bloody realistic FPS please explain to me the fucking need to re-enact death with horrendous detail and why newer and better ways to KILL EACHOTHER IS FUCKING COOL!?!?!?
am I missing some great obvious truth here?!?! the ONLY firearm that has ANY place in society is a single bolt action rifle for hunting purposes only. anything else is a tool designed PURELY for killing.
"But what about things like swords or machetes, you high horse idiot" fuck off with that shit because you can't massacre a whole crowd with a single sword.
does anyone else get my point?? does anyone else wonder when we're going to put the fucking weapons down and DO SOMETHING WORTHWHILE!?!?!?!
ARRRARAAGGHHHHH!!!!

| THWARTED! |
[04 Feb 2008|01:10pm] |
So im at work today, and one of my larger commercial clients calls me up and says she wants me to dispose to everything in the unit (33cubics....laymants terms....about the size of a small loungeroom) i ask whats in it for safety concerns, and she tells me its chock full of computer hardware.
now, common sense tells me that even though it's computer hardware, its bound to be old and decrepit. however, a small ray of hope was telling me that duie to the size and nature of this company (privacy laws forbid me to name names) that maybe they bought all this stuff when it was still bleeding edge, thus, may be usable in my computer now due to it's prehistoric demographic.
so, i happily run upstairs in the hopes of maybe grabbing a few new HDD's or even a spot of RAM.
nah, wasnt meant to be. they weren't lying when they said old. the 3 best things i found
- 4x CD-ROM drive - 4.2gb HDD - a "Blazing" 28.8 modem.
so, no loot for me today :(

Rage Against The Machine......holy fuck, what a ride
We were in the nosebleed section, but we had an excellent view. Started off by watching Anti-Flag who really weren't all that bad. It was sooo hot. I actually had sweat rolling down my arms and dripping off my fingers
About 45 minutes of nothing and suddenly, BAM! Lights go down and a huge red star appeared on the wall behind the stage. 8 years of pent up tension exploded from the crowd as Rage walked out.....wikkawikkawikkawikka TESTIFY!!!! at this point, i nearly died from happiness.
Damn me, what a show. the energy and power they create on stage is nothing short of a force of nature. Even after all these years, Zack has not lost his voice. Tom Morello has got to be one of the greatest guitar players on the planet & Tim Commerford is easily as funky as Flea.
- testify - people of the sun - bulls on parade - vietnow - calm like a bomb (wow, that was huge) - GUERILLA RADIO - bombtrack (holy christ on a cross brain bending power) - Bullet in the head (!) - Sleep Now In The Fire - RENEGADES OF FUNK (gotta admit, i kinda lost it when this came on. havent headbanged in years)
& heaps more.
at one point the heat was almost making it more fun. the animal energy from the crowd when guerilla radio came on was something else. anyone who has not seen Rage, next time they're out, make it happen. im hoping they hit the studio and put out something new. lord knows they've got more than enough material. finally, i can cross another "Must See" band off my list. what kinda sux is that the rest of the bands i wanna see before i die? most of them are dead :)
so, i'll end on this:
hearing the lyrics "WITH THE THOUGHTS FROM A MILITANT MIND, HARD LINE, HARD LINE AFTER HARD LINE" and seeing 2000 fists pumping with it.......im still getting shivers from it
one of these days im going to be the guy on stage with the camera, not just some sucker in the crowd. i want to be the one to remind the world that these bands and people exist. i want to be the one to remind the world that music can save

Ok, Heath Ledger is dead. i noticed this. It's a crying shame because he had a wealth of talent. Now, this is aimed at EACH AND EVERY MEDIA OUTLET ON THE PLANET:
1) Leave the family alone. None of this has anything to do with you. 2) If you gave as much press to REAL issues as you did to this tabloid SHIT, people like George Bush wouldn't be in power, not once, but TWICE. 3) Stop being such fucking dollar maggot whores and educate a public who so desperately need it.
That is all.
Oh, i fully second Stealbombers comments about fundy christians. Read a great quote somewhere:
"Originally, good men did good things and bad men did bad things. But with the rise of organised religion, we have good meen doing bad things in the name of 'good'" In regards to the loony fundy religious right.....i wonder whatever happened to America. Do these people forget that the original pilgrims fled England to ESCAPE RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION?!? Now look at what is going on.....

just had a funny memory jump into my head. last year when i was doing my night photography course, the class was crossing back over the princes bridge towards Flinders st. there was this young couple standing there looking about holding a small camera. as the group passes them, the male wanders over to me and asks "Can you take our picture" anyway, the whole class stops and reaches for the camera. anyway....i thought it was funny :)
and now for something completely different

Silent Poets - Moment Scale |

it's a weird thing. photographically, ive always been attaracted to what i call urban decay/modern ruins/fallen glory. i'd give anythng to be able to sneak ito places like abandoned hospitals or hotels (fear of asbestos and hobo's keep me away), or to go through the ghost towns in central america. i dunno what attracts me. i think it may be the wealth of memories stored in these places, just waiting for someone to come along to hear their story.
i also find a great visual attraction in laundromats. yup, you read right, laundromats. there's something about these dives of human solitude that i find really appealing. I think it's got something to do with the fact that they're sole purpose is to help people, yet at the same time, slowly bleed them. everyone sits there with everything in common, yet, everyone is equally afraid to say anything.
i dunno: if im not making sense, go look at an older one and see if you can feel it. a prime example is the one of high street, just near where Dayim used to be, about 100m south of the Plaza.
i plan to shoot that one soon.
(on a lighter note, i miss Dayim. Yob & Macros will probably back me on this one)
